About It's Holiday: Where the Dates Come From

It's Holiday (its.holiday) is a public-holiday reference for Canada (all 13 provinces and territories), China, the United States (federal holidays) and the United Kingdom (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland). It answers one question: which days are you actually off, and who says so.

Where the dates come from

  • China: the State Council General Office notice on holiday arrangements, published each year, including the make-up workdays (调休).
  • United States: federal holidays from 5 U.S.C. §6103. State pages show the federal list; holidays only a state observes are not included yet.
  • Canada: the public-holiday sections of each province's and territory's employment standards rules, and the Government of Canada list for federal holidays.
  • United Kingdom: the bank holidays published on GOV.UK.

Every page links the source it was read from and shows the date we last checked it. If a date cannot be traced to a source, we do not publish it.

How dates are checked

  • Rule-based holidays (such as "the last Monday in May") are computed from the rule in the statute, and each page says whether its dates are official or computed.
  • China's schedule is shown only after the State Council publishes it, usually in November of the year before. Until then the year is marked as not yet published, never guessed.
  • When a holiday falls on a weekend and moves to a weekday, the page labels it as a substitute day and keeps the original date visible.

Report a mistake or get in touch

If a date does not match the official source, or you have a question, email hello@its.holiday. Include the page link and the official source if you have it; once checked, we update the page and its last-checked date. The "Report a wrong date" link at the bottom of each page fills in the page address for you.

Disclaimer

The dates here are what the law or official notice says. They are for reference and are not legal advice. Whether a private employer closes, and how holiday pay works, depends on your contract, collective agreement and local rules, so check with your employer and the linked official source.
