- The date, and why
- Family Day 2026 in Ontario falls on Monday, February 16 — the third Monday of February. This creates a 3-day long weekend (Sat Feb 14 – Mon Feb 16).
- Where it counts as statutory
- Regional. Family Day is statutory in AB, BC, NB, ON, and SK. It is NOT a federal statutory holiday, so federal employees may not automatically receive it off. Nova Scotia observes Heritage Day on the same date.
- What closes
- Provincial government offices, banks, and schools close in Ontario. Many retail businesses remain open but must pay employees public holiday pay. Federal offices (Service Canada, passport offices) may remain open.
- Where the name comes from
- Family Day is designed to give families an opportunity to spend time together in mid-winter. Many communities host free family-oriented events at recreation centers, museums, and skating rinks.
