The date, and why: Family Day 2025 in Ontario, AB, SK, and NB falls on Monday, February 17 — the third Monday of February. This creates a 3-day long weekend (February 15–February 17). British Columbia observes Family Day on Monday, February 10 — the second Monday of February.
What kind of holiday: Family Day is a provincial statutory holiday under Ontario's Employment Standards Act (ESA). It was introduced in Ontario in 2008 to provide a mid-winter break.
Where it counts as statutory: Regional. Family Day is statutory in AB, BC, NB, ON, and SK. It is NOT a federal statutory holiday, so federal employees may not automatically receive it off. Nova Scotia observes Heritage Day on the same date.
Long weekend: February 2025 calendar (ON/AB/SK/NB): Sat Feb 15 – Sun Feb 16 – Mon Feb 17 (Family Day). BC Family Day is Monday, Feb 10.
What closes: Provincial government offices, banks, and schools close in Ontario. Many retail businesses remain open but must pay employees public holiday pay. Federal offices (Service Canada, passport offices) may remain open.
Where the name comes from: Family Day is designed to give families an opportunity to spend time together in mid-winter. Many communities host free family-oriented events at recreation centers, museums, and skating rinks.
