- The date, and why
- The 2026 Spring Festival observed window runs Feb 15–23 (9 days). Makeup workdays: Sat Feb 14, Sat Feb 28. Per the published State Council notice.
- What kind of holiday
- Spring Festival is China's most important traditional holiday. Statutory days are Lunar New Year's Eve through the third day of the first lunar month. For 2026, the State Council published an extended observed window — not a guess.
- Where it counts as statutory
- Nationwide. All government offices, schools, banks, and most businesses close. Some retail and transport services remain open with reduced hours.
- Long weekend
- 2026 Spring Festival window: Feb 15–23. Makeup workdays: Sat Feb 14, Sat Feb 28.
- What closes
- Banks, government offices, and most businesses close for the full window. Expect heavy travel demand (Chunyun/春运) and premium pricing on flights and trains. Factories often close for 2+ weeks.
- Where the name comes from
- Spring Festival marks the lunar new year. 2026 is the Year of the Horse. Traditions include family reunion dinners, red envelopes, and fireworks. The lunar date can be calculated; the State Council makeup-work window cannot.
