Schedule unpublishedState Council has not published 2028 调休. Typically announced November 2027

The date, and why: The 2026 National Day observed window runs from Thursday, October 1 through Wednesday, October 7 — a 7-day break. Makeup work days fall on Sunday, September 20 and Saturday, October 10.
What kind of holiday: National Day is a statutory holiday (3 days: October 1-3) celebrating the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The State Council extends it to a 7-day "Golden Week" through tiaoxiu (调休) adjustments.
Where it counts as statutory: Nationwide. Government offices, schools, and most businesses close. Major tourist destinations see peak crowds and elevated prices.
Long weekend: October 2026 calendar: Work Sun Sep 20 → Off Thu Oct 1 through Wed Oct 7 → Work Sat Oct 10. The surrounding weekends are disrupted to create the 7-day window.
What closes: Banks, government offices, and most businesses close. Domestic travel peaks — book flights, trains, and hotels well in advance. Some retail and restaurants remain open.
Where the name comes from: National Day commemorates Mao Zedong's proclamation of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949. Celebrations include flag-raising ceremonies, fireworks, and patriotic events in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.
